Dangers of a plastic world

OMG- It’s suddenly dawned on me how out of control our reliance is on plastic items! We use them every day without a thought of the consequences. All those toxins leeching into our system. We forget about our childs plastic lunch box, their retainer and that juce bottle that we think is only full of goodness.

Thankfully we have finally began to realise that wrapping our food in plastic is a definate no, no, but we need to go further. This constant use of plastic will have an effect on us and our children. I can see the headlines in a few years, toxin alert and who would have guessed so little could do so much harm. Infact these headlines are already appearing!

Many countries such as Canada and America have already started to ban certain plastic for babies bottles, but as usual we (the UK) lag behind. Bisphenol A is a substance found in many babys plastic bottles, it is also in food packaging and drinks cans. Studies have already shown that this chemical has been found in bodily fluids. It is worrying because these chemicals are known to mimic the femail hormone oestrogen and as such is putting people at risk. Our food standards agency insist the levels in the UK are safe, however studies looking at thousands of people in Europe, China, Japan and America showed that dangerous levels of bisphenol A in breast milk. In another study by a Dr Laura Vandenburg of Tufts University Massachusetts found traces of BPA in 591 out 599 children tested in Germany. This information on its own should be enough to make us act now!

Before the Government has to launch yet another of it’s scientific trials, we surley must begin to realise there is enough evidence out there already to be sensible and avoid plastic items that come into contact with food and drink.

We are constantly told to cut down on plastic for the sake of the planet, but what about for the sake of our health
